Text-to-911

Governor, Kim Reynolds and Lieutenant Governor, Adam Gregg, announced a new public safety tool for Iowans, Text-to-911. The system allows cell phone users to text 911 in an emergency. 94 of Iowa's 113 emergency call centers are already able to accept text messages. While, the other 19 centers are expected to have this capability by the end of the year. "Text-to-911 is a prime example of how we’re using technology to make Iowa a safer place for everyone,” Gov. Reynolds said. “Iowans are able to send a text to 911 when a voice call would put them in danger or when a medical condition makes it impossible for them to speak.” This has become a nationwide initiative, with the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management overseeing Iowa's 911 program. They've been working with wireless carriers and local public safety agencies to build a statewide network and make this program possible. Check with your carrier to see if Text-to-911 is available in your area. For more information visit Iowa Homeland Security & Emergency Management's Website
