Congratulations Cole and Meghan Wilson

Meghan Chapin (school psychologist, Atlantic) was united in marriage to Cole Wilson on Sept. 19 outside, in front of a little country chapel at Big Grove Village (east of Oakland, IA). "The weather was perfect and the whole experience was beautiful," Meghan said. "We drank champagne, played games, danced, and ate donuts to celebrate. It was truly the best day ever!" Sounds perfect, Meghan. Congratulations!

Cookies and calendars to cheer up the troops

Iowa Cookie Crumbs, part of Treat the Troops, delivers homemade cookies and treats to men and women serving overseas.  In addition to cookies, the group would like to provide 2016 calendars. Next time you stop by your grocery, auto parts or hardware store, and you see those free 2016 calendars, grab one more and send to Deb Zebill (Halverson), who in turn will get it to Iowa Cookie Crumbs.  To learn more, visit I owa Cookie Crumbs  or contact Deb at ext. 7290.

Elevate to eat less

Interesting tidbit in the Fall issue of Blue (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) . . . At restaurants, request a high-top table near the entrance. Dr. Brian Wansink, author of Slim By Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life , found that diners order more salads and fish when seated at elevated tables, while they are more likely to order dessert when seated far from the front door.

Council on Educator Development seeks feedback

A group of Iowans who make up the Council on Educator Development have spent the past two years studying teacher and administrator evaluation practices and professional development.  This document represents their preliminary recommendations . The council now needs feedback on these recommendations from Iowa’s education community, including superintendents, principals, teachers, AEA administrators and certified staff, and school board members.       This link will take you to an online survey , which includes instructions for submitting feedback: The survey will be open through  Nov. 30, 2015 . All survey feedback will remain anonymous.     Gathering input is critical not only to this process, it is required by law. The council was formed in 2013 in response to an education reform package adopted by Iowa lawmakers that same year. The legislation, House File 215, calls for a period of feedback beginning Oct. 1, 2015. Once the feedback is collected and analyzed, the council will use

Lost Schools documentary to air on IPTV

Image
A new documentary by  The Des Moines Register  follows two Iowa communities as they wrestle with the reality or possibility of losing a school. While filming, one of the districts -- Corwith-Wesley -- became the 4,316th to shutter in Iowa since 1950. The hour-long feature will air on Iowa Public Television, Oct 22 at 7 p.m.

Meet Kacie Bryant

Image
Kacie Bryant , speech-language pathologist, Avoca, enjoys seeing kids make progress and master a skill. Her favorite pastimes are boating, vacationing, crafting, watching movies, reading and being outside. Her most memorable vacation was to Florida and her dream vacation would be to Australia. No doubt on either trip she would be listening to country music. Welcome Kacie!

Pretty in Pink! Richardson has cause to celebrate!

Connie Richardson (school improvement consultant, Red Oak) and daughter, Emilee, participated in the 2015 Race for the Cure in Des Moines on Oct. 3. "We are celebrating 16 years cancer-free for me," said Connie. "October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Remember your monthly BSE (breast self exam) and annual mammogram. Emilee says there's even an app for that!" Congratulations Connie!

You won't want to miss Man of La Mancha!

Image
Each performance when the Omaha Community Playhouse cast sings The Impossible Dream , the closing number in Man of La Mancha , Lori Lynn Ahrends gets teary eyed.      Lori Lynn (early childhood consultant, Peterson) plays Maria and a prisoner (photo) in this five-time Tony Award winning tale of hope and inspiration.      Why the tears? "T he message of the show is an emotional mixture of hope, redemption, and yet sadness, and the finale brings all those emotions together," says Lori Lynn. It was also her grandmother's favorite song.        Betsie Freeman of the Omaha World Herald describes the show as a "very musical musical — there’s lots of singing that advances the plot and background music when there are no voices. It’s almost like an opera. It takes the right kind of ensemble to meet its vocal demands. Director Hilary Adams has assembled a cast that not only meets the challenge, it conquers the music like Don Quixote slays his imaginary dragons."

Mist is also available at upcoming flu shot clinics

Again this year, the Visiting Nurse Association will provide flu shots. GHAEA staff and family members can attend whichever location is most convenient. A list of acceptable insurances and the costs associated with those not insured, along with the necessary consent form, were sent in an email from  Lori Kinyon  on Sept. 15.
